April Fools

By Ana Mcginley and Maris Hepley

History of April Fools

Historians say that April Fools dates back to 1582 when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. In the Julian calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the year began with the spring equinox on April 1st. People who were slow to get the news or failed to see that the new year had moved to Jan. 1st continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1st became jokes and hoaxes and were called April Fools. These pranks included putting paper fish on their backs, and were referred to as “Poisson D’avril” which means April fish, which symbolizes a young, easy caught fish or a gullible person.

Top 3 April Fools Pranks

  1. Mayonnaise Filled Donuts

First take a plain donut with no hole and make the inside hollow. Take mayonnaise and fill the hole up. Finally, give it to one of your friends or family members and sit back and enjoy.

2. Food Fake Outs

Take one of your favorite bags of chips (Cheetos, Lays, etc) and open the bottom of the bag. Dump all food out of the bag and fill them with a gross food (green beans, banana chips) and hot glue the bag shut. Give to a friend and watch them react.

3. Remote “Control”

Take the remote from any of your TVs when nobody is watching. Take the batteries out of the remote and put back in place near the TV. Call your friend or family member and ask them if they want to watch a movie. Get some popcorn and come back to them trying to turn on a movie.

We interviewed Vice Principal Elliot, and asked him a few questions about what he thinks about April Fools.

What do you think about April Fools?

“It stresses me out, but it can be really fun.”

Have you ever performed any April fools pranks? If so, what were they?

“Mhm, I have. It was to my dad. I put a rubber band on the sink, three years in a row.”

Do you think April Fools should be a national holiday? Why?

“I would say no, because if everyone in the world would prank it would be scary.”

If someone was to prank you, who would you want to perform an April fools prank?

“Hm, probably Ms. Bloss. I imagine her dumping a bucket of slime on me.”

What would you rate April fools on a scale from 1-10?

“A six.”

Out of Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween, what would you rank it?

“Probably 3rd. Christmas 1st, Thanksgiving 2nd, April Fools 3rd, and Halloween 4th.”
