BLACK HISTORY MONTH

By Frankey Oldham and Emelia Hicks

Black History Month is a time of the year when we celebrate the achievements of important African Americans like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks and Madam CJ Walker. These people are important because they helped make positive change for black people, including working to give African Americans equal rights.

Black History Month was founded in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson as a week-long celebration, but in 1976 it became a month-long celebration in February. Each year there is a theme and this year it is Black Resistance.

Mrs. Loftus, the school librarian, says, “I feel it's important for schools to recognize Black History Month all year because there are contributions and achievements made by black Americans in the past, present and in the future. As an educator, it’s my responsibility and privilege to share these contributions and achievements with my students.”

How will you celebrate and learn about these important achievements? Tell us in the comments!
