Bussin’ Bread, A Yats Review

Berlynn Sommer & Clara Rosenbarger

Yats, a popular restaurant in Indianapolis, was founded by Joe Vuskovich in 2001. The restaurant has since expanded to nine locations spread around Indianapolis and its suburbs, the closest location being at 5363 N College Ave. The chain specializes in Cajin-Creole cuisine, which is incredibly popular In New Orleans. This unique style of food has French, European, and African influences. For this issue's restaurant review, we sampled some of the dishes Yats has to offer.

Yats offers five main dishes, two of which are vegetarian. It is extremely affordable with a meal starting at $9, along with your dish of choice you receive a serving of bread, rice, and a drink.

Items:

  • Drunken chicken 8/10

  • Chicken was very tender

  • Strong rosemary flavor

  • Black bean caramelized corn (vegetarian) 7/10

  • Sweet from the corn

  • Sometimes called BnB because the beans look black and blue

  • Chili Cheese etouffee (with crawfish) 9/10

  • Cheesy

  • Crawfish brings dish together

  • Red beans (with sausage) 6/10

  • Medium Spice

  • Similar to refried beans

  • Spinach and Mushroom etouffee (vegetarian) 10/10

  • Slightly spicy

  • Not a distinct mushroom taste

  • Cheesy

Overall, we thought Yats was an amazing restaurant! Our favorite dish was the Spinach and Mushroom etouffee, but our real favorite was the bread. It was incredibly well-cooked and had a delicious vegan butter on top. Next time you're looking for a place to eat, make sure to stop by.
