Day in the life of a third grader

By Ian Miller and Alice Christie

Third grade is a time of growth and maturing for students. They begin to become more independent and are exposed to tons of fun opportunities. Here at 84, third grade is led by Mrs. Blatchley and Mrs. Collins. Third graders look forward to once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as Lemonade Day and the Marengo Cave. A typical day consists of Morning Meeting, word study, reading their novel, using math skills, and Unit of Inquiry.

Recently, they have been reading Punished! by David Lubar. Student Lila says that it’s “really interesting, exciting, and funny.” They are also learning about the metric system and are solving multi-step math problems. Student Fritz’s favorite part of the year so far has been learning about Native American tribes. Most of all, third graders love their teachers! Student Jane said “Our teachers are very nice, fair, and humble, and encourage us to learn more, challenge us to do harder things we aren’t used to.”
