Day In The Life Of Second Grader

Alice Christie and Ian Miller

Second graders are in for a year filled with fun and learning. Here at 84 second grade is taught by Miss Byrd and Mrs. Sullivan. With many exciting units and events coming up, second graders have a lot to look forward to. Some of these class favorites are the bee unit, where second graders get to learn all about bees, and the bridge unit, where students begin learning about engineering. Recently, they have been working on non-fiction brochures and today (Dec. 15) they are presenting them to parents! A typical day consists of Morning meeting, Math Workshop, an IB unit, reading workshop, writing workshop, and specials. The current IB unit is how we organize ourselves, and second graders will be doing a project to study erosion, where they create a mountain out of cornmeal, and plan ways to keep it from eroding.

Student Mila really liked the How the World Works unit. got to make paper boats! Weston really likes to learn math. His favorite strategy is the number sentence string! Cora really likes writing because there are so many things you can do, for example, brochures! But everybody’s favourite part of second grade is the teachers! Student Scarlett loves her teachers because they are super nice, and not very strict. Weston says that he likes the way "they always count on us". But most importantly, Miss Byrd says “We have a lot of fun in 2nd grade!  We want people to know that we love to learn and be together!”
