Journey to the Capital

By Mavis Cropp

All of our eighth graders at 84 have been long awaiting the end of the school year, not only because of graduation but also because of their trip to Washington D.C. Washington D.C, short for District of Colombia, is our country’s capital, located in between Maryland and Virginia. Most students in the country go to the capital sometime during their last year of middle school, but 84’s eighth graders are taking their trip in May, right before their graduation. For many, the most interesting and informational place that the eighth graders will be visiting is the National Mall, a 146-acre section of land that includes some of D.C.’s most memorable landmarks. These include the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and many Smithsonian museums and war memorials. Some other memorable places they will visit are the Pentagon, the White House, Mount Vernon, and the Capital Building. Another big reason that the 8th graders are excited is that they get their own hotel rooms, and they get to explore a new city with friends. Washington DC is a splendid and educational place to visit and our eighth graders are thrilled to have this experience.
