Murals in Indy

By:Miles Cheney

What really is a Mural? Murals are artwork attached to ceilings or walls. Indianapolis has several murals, but this article focuses on murals of Hoosiers! The first mural I want to show is writer Kurt Vonnegut, who’s written many famous novels. He’s placed on the side of Slapfish restaurant. Next mural is of Marshall “Major” Taylor, the first African-American cycling world champion! He earned seven world records, breaking racial barriers along the way. His mural is at 11 S. Meridian Street. The final mural I have to show is of famous poet Mari Evans at 448 Massachusetts Ave. Evans wasn’t born in Indiana, but lived here most of her life. “Murals are important because they can tell stories about different communities and the people who live there or whose legacies live on.” said Amanda Kingsbury, Marketing and Communications Director of the Indy Arts Council, showing importance of murals to communities.
