Top Five flags

By: Liam Leary

There are many countries that exist today, about 200, actually, and all of those countries have a flag. Flags are meant to represent a country through colors and shapes. Here are some of my favorite flags.

So, a flag is made good by having a good balance between colors, and not too many of them. Also, this is very important, the ideal number of words on a flag: zero. A flag is supposed to represent a country through a color and design, not through words. They already have something for that which we won't talk about. Here are some examples of bad flags:

(These are American city flags, not country flags.)

Anyway, let´s finally look at my five favorite flags.

5. Norway

Norway's flag is completely influenced by the Nordic countries, who have a very similar design pattern. The Nordic cross, combined with some sort of background. The thing with Norway is that the color choice is amazing (in my opinion), and that makes it stand out as a really good flag.

4. Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan has a very nice tricolor choice, which would be kind of weird if the crescent in the middle didn´t exist and make it look really nice. Again, the tricolor choice is amazing. Nice how they set it up.

3. Ethiopia

Ethiopia's flag is very interesting. The tricolor looks nice in comparison to the star in the middle, which looks good as the icon of the flag and wraps the flag up very nicely. The tricolor is a very historical tricolor, because many old empires where modern day Ethiopia is today have used a similar flag, and the same tricolor. This would be just average, but the star and the blue wrap up the flag perfectly.

2. Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea not only has a long name, but more than 3 colors which often does not work out well, but Papua New Guinea is an exception. The bird is very random yet wraps up the flag perfectly with the red and black combination, and even though the white stars look nice, I don't think they fit in very well, although the other things make it look better.

  1. Solomon Islands

This country is made up of islands in the Pacific ocean near the previously discussed Papua New Guinea. This flag has the perfect combination of colors that, in my opinion, makes it the best country flag. Blue, green, and yellow look very nice together if used correctly. The Solomon Islands used it waaay better than correctly.

Anyway, that is the end of my article about flags. If I can, I might make a more detailed or better researched version of this article. I hope you liked this article, because this was my first article I made for the newspaper club. Obviously, this article would be kind of important considering that our school is an international school that tries to celebrate all the cultures of the world (Go Bears!) and try to do it in some sort of unique way. With this article concluded, goodbye!
