Valentines day around the world

By: Addie Duncan

Valentine's Day is a time most people spend with their loved ones and friends, but have you ever wondered how different cultures celebrate? In Hispanic cultures, their Valentine's Day is called El Dia de San Valentin. During this day lovers will give each other gifts and eat dinner together. Mr. Hawkins said this holiday differs depending on what country you live in. According to Ms. Chu, Taiwan celebrates two Valentine's Days. The lunar calendar, which lands on July 7th, and the western calendar, which is celebrated on February 14. The Chinese Valentine’s Day is based on an old folktale called The Cowherd Boy and the Weaver Girl. The story goes, a cow herder and a weaver girl, who’s in heaven, fall in love. Heaven's emperor became very upset about her marriage. They separated the cow herder and the weaver girl, but the magpies were sympathetic and built a bridge so they could meet on the seventh day of the seventh month every year. There are many ways to celebrate and show appreciation for the friends and family you have. So treat every day like it’s Valentine's Day<3
